The Best Advice I can give…..
The Best Advice for Women Considering a Boudoir Photography Session
In my line of work, I talk to many women about their bodies, and I’ve noticed that a slew of insecurities inevitably works its way into our conversations, like an unwelcome guest intruding on the fun. To combat these insecurities, many of us get stuck in a hamster wheel thought pattern I like to call “the someday cycle.”
It goes something like this:
Someday, I’ll lose these extra 10 pounds.
Someday, I’ll Botox my wrinkles.
Someday, I’ll freeze my cellulite.
Someday, I’ll remove my unsightly moles.
Someday, I’ll fix the bags under my eyes.
Someday, I’ll look perfect in my bathing suit.
Someday, someday, someday.
Don’t get me wrong – As a woman in her 40s, I’ve caught myself in the someday cycle, too. If I’m honest, I have insecurities of my own, like my tummy, my laugh lines that seem to carve deeper with each passing year and my muscular thighs put my husband’s to shame. Ha!
So, how can we escape this unending someday cycle, once and for all?
Learn to love the skin we’re in.
In this article, I’ll give you tips on how I like to embrace the idea of body love and share the best boudoir photography advice for women interested in booking a session.
How to embrace body love
I love photographing women because everyone needs to realize how beautiful they are in their own skin. However, the reality is that we often don’t feel beautiful, so we pick apart our flaws and vow to fix or hide them. Sure, I could use Photoshop to make everyone look like supermodel Giselle Bündchen, but perfection is not what we’re after in my boudoir photography sessions. Instead, we want to cultivate the idea of loving the skin we’re in – just as it is.
My technique for embracing body love is to think of the events and experiences in my life that have contributed to my so-called flaws. Then, I reframe them as parts of me that I wouldn’t want to change, even if I could. For instance, my tummy reminds me that I’m grateful to be a mother to two beautiful children. My laugh lines are evidence that I live a joyful life filled with laughter and smiles. And my thighs represent my physical strength and power, not a weakness deserving of shame or rejection.
Body love isn’t a new idea, but it’s one that deserves more airplay. I’m on a mission to help women embrace their bodies through boudoir photography – which brings me to the best advice for any woman considering a session.
The best boudoir photography advice
If you’re interested in a boudoir photography session, but you’re holding back because of body insecurity, remember this: there’s no one way to be beautiful. You don’t have to look perfect to be worthy enough to step in front of my camera. There’s no need to lose weight, get a tan, hide your wrinkles, or achieve some aspirational milestone. With me, you can come exactly as you are. I’ll coach you on how to pose and design sets that reveal your true beauty.
So, my advice for any woman waiting for the “perfect” time for boudoir photography is not to let your insecurities get in the way. You don’t have to feel trapped in the faraway somedays of the future – it’s okay to give yourself permission to look and feel beautiful right now.
